Michael Cohen - Mayor

52 years old, born and lives in Kalkara. He is married to Doris and they have two children. He was educated at the De La Salle College and at the University of Malta. He occupied the post of secretary for the Kalkara Football Club between 1978-1980. He has been an active member within the Malta Labour Party. As a matter of fact he held the position of Secretary for the Local Committee and Deputy secretary for the second electoral district.

In 1998 he was elected as a member of the National Executive of the Malta Labour Party. He has contested the 2000-2003-2006 and 2009 Local Councils Elections for Kalkara where he was always elected Mayor. He is also the President of the Local Council’s Association ( Malta) since 2006.

Michael Cohen is the Head of the Maltese Delegation in the Council of Europe’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities. He is also the Head of the Maletse Delegation and Vice President of the Committee of the Regions in the European Union, wherein he sits on the Sustainable Development (DEVE) Commission, the Commission for Territorial Cohesion (COTER), and the Commission for Constitutional Affairs, European Governance and the Area of Freedom, Security, and Justice (CONST). Within the Sustainable Development (DEVE) Commission of the Committee of the Regions, Mr. Michael Cohen is the Group Coordinator of the Party of European Socialists.

Mr. Michael Cohen has recently had the honour of becoming the first Maltese representative to be appointed as Rapporteur to the Committee of the Regions. His opinion concerning the Thematic Strategy and Draft Directive of the European Marine Environment has been adopted by the Committee of the Regions during its Plenary Session held in April 2006.

 

Norbert Grech - Deputy Mayor

Elected for the first time on the 6th June election of this year.

Norbert Grech was born in Kalkara on the 6th of August 1983. His parents, Joseph and Margaret are both from Kalkara. He began his primary education at the Kalkara Primary School and advanced to secondary level at the Guze’ Despott Verdala Lyceum. He attended successfully a post-secondary course on foundation skills.

His first working experience started as a Floor Manager on Super One Radio and TV. In 2000 he was employed as a Staaff technician with ST. Microelectronics.

Between 2005-2007 he was chosen as a Union delegate in the Telecommunication Section of the GWU. At the age of 18 he became member of the Labour Party involving himself in the 2004-2009 national elections.

Maria Sultana - Councilor

Local councillor responsible for Education, was born on 28th April 1952 in Mellieha. She has been married to Joe for 34 years and they have three children Nerissa, Cathleen and Keith.

She has contested successfully the Local Councils elections of 1997-2000-2003-2006 and 2009.

Her hobbies include flower-arrangements, reading and travelling. She has been elected to the local council for three consecutives terms and currently also holds the following positions. 1. President of Patri Wistin Borg Kalkara Primary School Council. 2. Under secretary Kalkara P.N. Club 3. Under secretary Women's Movement of National Party.

Speranza Chircop - Councilor

Was born in Floriana. She is married to Frank and have a daughter Jaqcqueline. She has been living in Kalkara since 1980 (29 years). She attended the Rosary School Sacred Heart in St. Julians. This is the fifth time she is serving as Councilor in Kalkara. Contesting her first election in 1996 she was elected as an independent candidate. She got re-elected as a labour party candidate in 2000-2003-2006 and 2009. Her responsibilities in the Council are mostly related to the elder people and to those with special needs.

 

Roderick Mizzi - Councilor

Roderick Mizzi was born on the 15th of April 1986. He is the sole child of Carmelo and Catherine Mizzi. He had his primary education at the Kalkara Primary School and his secondary education at the Junior Lyceum Guzeppi Despott where he was part of the students council for 3 years, 2 of which as president. In the year 2008, Roderick finished a 5 years course and got a Diploma in IT. Mr. Mizzi was elected for the first time in March 2006  and re-elected in June 2009, where he is responsible for the Public6 Library and Information Technology (IT).

Roderick was recently elected in the Labour Youth Forum’s Executive and he was appointed as the ICT Department’s Coordinator.

Besides the political life, Roderick is the President of the Kalkara Youth Nursery and Deputy Secretary at the Kalkara Football Club.

 

 

Sharon Galea Iriele - Executive Secretary

Sharon Galea Iriele Was born at Attard in 1980. Married to Damian, and was brought up in Kalkara. She took her Primary Education at the Kalkara Primary school followed by the Secondary Education at Maria Regina Junior Lyceum. Attended and completed Secretarial Course at Sir Hannibal Schicluna, School for Secretariel Studies. Joined the Local Council Administration Staff in 1998. In 2001 successfully attended Managerial Course including Managing Human Resources, Time, Change and Marketing.
